The Levitical Consortium's Statement of Purpose

The Levitical Consortium was formed in July of 2010 to honor one of music’s most prolific composers, the late Walter Hawkins. It does so by promoting the appreciation of his music, creating awareness of pancreatic cancer (the disease that Hawkins suffered from) and supporting the charity created in his memory, the Walter Hawkins Memorial Foundation, a non-profit organization formed to positively impact his legacy through philanthropic works in his name.

A musical tribute was held in Oakland CA, Hawkins’ hometown, on July 20, 2010, the night before his official memorial service. It featured some of the most popular artists in the music industry performing a “tribute” concert of his music. Many of those around the country and the world who loved his music were not able to travel to or participate in the official memorial services in California. Internationally renowned soprano soloist Darnita Hassell had the vision to pay tribute to him in her hometown of Philadelphia PA, a city where his music was very popular and where he had many friends and supporters including, but not limited to, Ms Hassell herself. She shared her idea with Producer, Musical Director Joel Bryant, who had attended the concert and service in CA. She asked him if he would he serve as Musical Director of a “tribute” concert of his music in Philadelphia. She felt that because Mr. Bryant is Musical Director for legendary recording artist, Tramaine Hawkins, who sang many of Hawkins’ biggest hits, Bryant’s familiarity with Hawkins’s music would serve her vision of a well-done concert performance of his classic songs. The two of them contacted other prominent colleagues in the music industry to share this idea. The response was overwhelmingly positive and the Levitical Consortium was born! Various, disparate prominent organizations, entities and individuals have come together to join Ms. Hassell and the consortium in expressing their love for his music and contributing to his legacy through the support of his foundation.

Their first event will be a concert entitled “A Special Gift: The Music of Walter Hawkins” which will feature the spectacular performances of Ms. Hassell, other prominent outstanding soloists from the Philadelphia area and the Levitical Consortium Mass Choir. It will take place Monday, October 18, 2010, 7:00 p.m. at the Sharon Baptist Church, 3955 Conshohocken Ave, Philadelphia PA. Other guest recording artists will also be performing. Proceeds from the evening will benefit the Walter Hawkins Memorial Foundation.
