Celebrate the New Year With a Service-Minded New Year's Resolutionby: Chaz Howard
I'm pretty ambivalent about New Year's Eve. I've had some great ones -- had some that I'd rather not remember. Some years were spent braving below freezing temperatures watching fireworks with friends. Other years were spent in "Watch Night" worship services. I definitely brought in a few years dancing at parties to music that is now old school. Most recently, I've enjoyed taking my two daughters out to watch the fireworks close to our home. Yet, it is sometimes challenging to get them to come out because the loud bangs and sky-filling lights are little scary to them. But once they get past their fears and move from the safety and comfort of being inside, to the risk of being outside, special things happen.
Aside from the celebrations, and the time with loved ones, one of the most interesting aspects of New Year's to me has always been the notion of making resolutions. Many of us make promises and set goals for ourselves for the upcoming year. Most often these are inwardly focused goals with the intent of bettering ourselves, making ourselves healthier, more financially resilient, more responsible, more at peace. All of these are positive, but maybe these types of resolutions are not as powerful as they could be.
Maybe when we make resolutions that are solely about bettering ourselves, we are missing an opportunity to make a promise or set goals about serving others and making a difference in our communities and in our world.
I'll be the first to admit that I'm not much good at keeping up New Year's resolutions. So I suppose I really shouldn't be challenging others to make them.
But here it comes...

(4) Discourage them from spending family time, for when homes disintegrate there's no refuge from work. (5) Over-stimulate their minds with television and computers so that they can't hear God speaking to them. (6) Fill their coffee tables and nightstands with newspapers and magazines so they've no time for Bible reading. (7) Flood their letter boxes with sweepstakes, promotions and get-rich-quick schemes; keep them chasing material things. (8) Put glamorous models on TV and on magazine covers to keep them focused on outward appearances; that way they'll be dissatisfied with themselves and their mates. (9) Make sure couples are too exhausted for physical intimacy; that way they'll be tempted to look elsewhere. (10) Emphasize Santa and the Easter Bunny; that way you'll divert them from the real meaning of Christmas and Easter. (11) Involve them in 'good' causes so they won't have any time for 'eternal' ones. (12) Make them self-sufficient. Keep them so busy working in their own strength that they'll never know the joy of God's power working through them. Do these twelve things faithfully. I promise it'll work!' Have you figured out the difference between being busy and being successful in what God's called you to do? Sometimes being B-U-S-Y just means Being Under Satan's Yoke!

Tertullian was a Christian writer/lawyer in the days Marcus Aurelius (Emperor of Rome). He made a profound statement that changed my way of living. He said, "The blood of martyrs is the seed of the church" In other words, the faith of one who is willing to lose his life can multiply the faith in others. Just looking at the religious and social climate we live in today, I believe we are once again approaching an era of martyrdom. The question is...are we willing to die for what we believe?

Kristen Betts was a full time youth worker with the Acts 2 Ministry in Roanoke, Virginia for 3 years. Called to the mission field after her tenure at Virginia Tech, Kristen uses a wide array of gifts to share the truth of Jesus Christ as THE WAY to a lost generation. Music being a main passion, Kristen, aka DJ SNS, uses two turntables and a mixer to platform the Gospel as a medium to reach the urban culture. Most recently, DJ Such-N-Such toured with Level 3:16, a Christian hip hop group of the Impact Movement. Hundreds and hundreds of people are exposed to the gospel and hundreds accept Christ! Kristen, even before surrendering to Christ, has been drawn to the hip hop culture through music and dance and is blown away with how God now uses these same elements to share her life and testimony with others. With a heart for God, thousands of tracks, a charismatic personality, and a passion to keep everyone excited, DJ Such-N-Such will provide a dynamic atmosphere to any occasion that will promote Christ to the fullest.
